Chocolate Moon Smoothie

We LOVE chocolate and this smoothie is a sneaky and delicious way to eat a healthy dose! Dark chocolate is a powerful source of antioxidants and some say it could even improve brain function! Yay, chocolate.

The hemp seeds and nut butter are excellent protein sources while the bananas provide a nice boost of potassium, one of the most important minerals in the body. Potassium functions as an electrolyte and helps regulate fluid balance, nerve signals, and muscle contractions.

We consider dates “nature’s candy” because they add a punch of sweetness while delivering many health benefits. Dates are rich in selenium, manganese, copper, and magnesium which all contribute to excellent bone health and the prevention of Osteoporosis. Dates also contain protein and fiber to facilitate healthy digestion.

This creation is inspired by our favorite Moontower Smoothie, discovered at Juiceland in Austin, TX. So many reasons to be “over the moon” for this decadent Chocolate Moon Smoothie!

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup non-dairy milk such as, almond milk

  • 2 tablespoons (heaping) cocoa powder

  • ¼ cup hemp seed hearts

  • 4 Medjool dates (pitted)

  • 2 cups frozen banana (3-4 bananas)*

  • 1 tablespoon nut butter, optional

  • optional splash of maple syrup to add more sweetness. Sweetness will depend on the type of non-dairy milk you choose.

  • abundant love

Directions

  • If dates were refrigerated, we soak them in warm water for a few minutes before adding them to the smoothie so they blend in easier.
  • Add your non-dairy milk, cocoa powder, hemp seed hearts and, dates to the blender and blend until combined.**
  • Add your frozen bananas, 1/2 cup at a time and, blend until smooth. If using nut butter, toss it in along with bananas. ENJOY!

Notes

  • *Something magical happens to bananas when frozen, they just add a creaminess to your smoothie so, if you use fresh bananas, please know your smoothie will still be nutritious, just not as delicious…we promise!  So, we highly recommend you freeze those bananas and make the smoothie tomorrow.
  • ** Definitely be sure the dates are mixed smooth before adding the frozen bananas, otherwise, you will have chunks of dates (not the worst) in your smoothie.
